Art Kane was one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century. A bold visionary, Kane’s work encompassed fashion, editorial, celebrity portraiture, travel, and nudes with a restless and innovative eye, and he gravitated towards strong colour, eroticism and surreal humour. Of that handful of elite post-World War II photographers, Art Kane was the wild child. Unflinching, uncompromising and unsentimental, Kane’s focus was on what would happen next.
We featured Art Kane’s music photographs in a gallery exhibition in 2008. Now it is time to widen out the net, and this time we present a carefully curated selection from across his entire archive, coinciding with the publication of a retrospective book of his career by our good friends at Reel Art Press. Copies of the book will be available to purchase at the gallery, and we are delighted that Art Kane’s son Jonathan and his partner Holly Anderson will be visiting with us from New York for the launch of the exhibition.
