We are delighted to be offering a collection of signed press prints from Pennie Smith. The complete collection we will be offering actually goes way further than the Clash, and covers Pennie’s sessions with Iggy Pop, David Bowie, The Stones, The Jam, Stone Roses, Paul Weller, Bruce Springsteen, Blur and others, but for now, we wanted to focus on The Clash.
Pennie is one of the UK’s leading photographers and Clash fans in particular will need no introduction to her work, as she took the cover photograph for the London Calling album. Unlike many of her peers from the seventies, Pennie is still very much a full time working photographer and rarely has the time to exhibit her work. Pennie has recently had a mammoth clear out and filing exercise, the result of which was to uncover a series of duplicate press prints from her archives, which she has offered to us.
These photographs are in small sizes, typically on 9.5×12 inch (24x30cm) paper, sometimes smaller. Many of these photographs appeared in Pennie’s renowned 1980 book, The Clash Before and After, and many of the physical prints date back to the time of the book. So these are not contemporary prints in perfect condition. Given they are over 30 years old, they exhibit signs of their age, but the fact that they were made by Pennie herself in the darkroom at the time the book was at the planning stage adds to their appeal and their potential value. Each photograph is signed by Pennie Smith. For most of them, we just have one example, so if this is up your street, prepare to get excited about this cache of Clash. Prices will be very keen – you will be able to pick up a signed Pennie Smith original for under £400.
They are available to purchase now, on a first come first served basis. You can view them online here.
