Michael Putland (1947-2019) recalled: I went to David’s home, which was a flat in Haddon Hall in Beckenham, to take some photographs for Disc and Music Echo. Bowie came to the door, cigarette in one hand, paintbrush in the other, wearing a one piece catsuit I had seen him perform in on stage a little while before.
“Hello mate” he said. “I’m painting my ceiling. Do you mind if I finish it?”
And that was how I found myself with a wonderful set of photos of the great man up a ladder waiting the ceiling dressed in his stage clothes, with a matching hat to keep the paint drips off his hair.
