Twins Helen and Catherine Jay were photographed by John d Green for Birds of Britain at his Kensington studio on 9 November 1966.
They came from an esteemed political family: they are the daughters of the late Labour cabinet minister Douglas Jay and Labour councillor Peggy Jay. In their mother’s obituary in The Guardian they were described as follows: “Catherine and Helen hit every go button in the swinging 60s:”
The sisters attended Sussex University in 1964 and made one of their first public appearances in the 1966 film Alfie, starring Michael Caine.
