The Byrds by Barry Feinstein
New collection now online
Where were you when the Byrds first jangled their way into your reality?
For me it was as a teenager in 1980, and the medium was Volume 1 of The Original Singles LP, with sleeve notes by the late great Johnny Rogan. Both volumes—almost 2,500 pages—of his epic Byrds biography, Requiem for the Timeless, sit proudly on my shelf.
I can only imagine what it must have been like to hear their version of ‘Mr Tambourine Man’ when it was first released in 1965. It was like nothing that came before it. Not only did they sound amazing, they looked incredible, especially in that early period when they first broke through into the mainstream.
Barry Feinstein’s fine 1965 portraits of that first majestic line-up of McGuinn, Clark, Crosby, Hillman and Clarke capture them at that exuberant time—five young talented guys living the dream.
I am delighted that the Barry Feinstein estate have authorised the release of a collection of limited edition Byrds photographs. These are now available to purchase and enjoy on your walls every day. It goes without saying that you will feel a whole lot better—probably—as a result.
